Kite using coconut leaf

Items required to make this kite:

To make the kite, you need two sides of one leaflet (12 inches of length) and the spine.

How to make the kite using coconut leaf

  1. Separate 2 to 3 narrow leaves (individual leaflet) from the mid rib of a big coconut leaf as shown in the picture.

  2. Take one of the leaflets and trim both sides of the leaflet. Separate the spine from the leaflet and trim this leaflet to required size. 12 inches will be a typical size.

  3. Now hold the side 1 and side 2 of the leaflet one above the other to form an "X" as shown in the picture. Keep side 2 above the side 1 and hold it at the center.

Let us name the four sides of the leaflet as S1, S2, S3 and S4 as labelled in the picture above, for a better understanding.

  4. Now, fold the sides S1 and S2 to form a loop as shown.

  5. Fold the side S4 and insert it in the loop formed by folding S1. Similarly, fold the side S3 and insert it in the loop formed by S2 as shown in the picture below.
  6. Pull the tips of four sides to tighten the loops. It will leave a hole at the center as shown in the picture below.
  7. Insert the spine, which was prepared earlier, in the center hole and give it to a child to run holding it. As the wind blows, the kite will start rotating.
